Educators act ethically and maintain the integrity, credibility and reputation of the profession.

“Educators are role models. Educators are held to a higher standard and are accountable for their conduct on duty and off duty. Educators understand the law as it relates to their duties. Educators’ individual conduct contributes to the perception of the profession as a whole. Educators know and recognize the importance of the Professional Standards for BC Educators.” (BCTC Professional Standards for BC Educators)

During my entire time as a classroom teacher and while I was TTUCing, I always acted as an ethical role model both on and off teaching and professional duties. This is basically the professional standard number two, and I feel that all teachers in the profession (at least that I have witnessed) follow this standard each and every day. My appearance, dress and conduct were always professional, each and every day that I worked.

In December of 2022, the original classroom teacher of the class I had took over officially resigned from their position; the principal approached me and strongly suggested that I apply for the job. I told her that I would have loved to apply for it, but because I wanted to go back to practicum in May, I could not commit to a full year long contact. She understood and told me that if I ever needed a reference, she would happily give me one. After a week of the job being posted on Make a Future, it was filled. I was heartbroken, but I knew it was for the best, as I had to leave in May and the sooner another teacher could take over the class it would be better for the students. I learned a lot during my time as a classroom teacher and I fell in love with the school, and I fully intend to go back when I am done the program.

After my first term as a classroom teacher ended, I continued to work as an uncertified temporary teacher on call (TTUC). During this time, I always acted in way that would shed a positive light on the teaching profession. I understand that I am a role model and that my conduct and actions, both on and off duty, are held to a higher standard. I know and recognize the value and importance of the Professional Standards for BC Educators, and I will uphold them to the best of my ability.
